Rape & Sexual Assault Links

As a women’s organization, FiRE receives local  inquiries for New York area resources from women who require affordable, language-accessible care.  Because of this, we have compiled a list of resources for women living in the New York/New Jersey areas.  If you have any suggested links, please leave it in the comment boxes below, and we will promptly add it to this page – thanks!

If you’ve come to this page looking for guidance because you or a loved one are survivors of sexual assault, please consider the following next steps and resources:

  1. Tell someone you trust.  Sexual assault is traumatic, and you don’t need to do it alone. You will need a lot of support as you move forward, so make sure someone you trust can be beside you during this time.
  2. Go to the hospital/clinic within 72 hours of the incident.  THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED TO DO! It’s important for your own health,  to make sure that you didn’t acquire any sexually transmitted diseases. A nurse who deals specifically with rape and sexual assault will administer a rape kit. (Read more about the process of being examined with a rape kit here at the RAINN website, and here from Advocacy Support Center.)
  3. Write down everything you remember about the incident, and keep it somewhere safe.  While this is a very difficult step, it will allow you to transfer all the details from your mind to paper.  This can be used for your own healing process, or as a draft for any statements/reports you would want to file with your local police once you are ready to do so in the future.
  4. Go file a report with the police – better to do this sooner than later.  This is an important step if you’re thinking about taking legal action in the future.  They need to gather evidence against your attacker to go forward with your case.  It’s important to note that not all police will be as mindful of you and your needs at the moment, so it is well within your right to ask specifically for a Sexual Assault Advocate to be present with you while filing your report with the police.
  5. Join a support group or get counseling.  This is to ensure that you have an means of sharing your story with people who will listen, as you move forward from this traumatizing event.  Find some local, affordable mental health resources here.

We wish you the best of luck, and hope that the resources below help!
