Silogs for Change: FiRE’s 5th Birthday Brunch Fundraiser

Join us for silogs* and calamansi mimosas as we celebrate five years of serving the Filipina migrant community in NYC.

Tickets are $30 per adult or $15 per child, 10 and under.
Admission includes food, a drink, and entertainment by FiRE.

Diwang Pinay
Diwang Pinay (”Spirit of the Filipina”) is an annual performance and silent auction in New York City showcasing Filipina/ Filipina-American performers, writers, and visual artists. This FiRE event is one of the few venues solely dedicated to providing Filipinas and Filipina-Americans a platform to display their triumphs and struggles through art, linking history to the narrative of today’s Filipina. Pinay HERstories
A night with local Pinay artists who will be reading and performing works meant to inspire, empower, and most importantly, relate to Pinays like us! This is our annual OPEN HOUSE where you can also meet the women of Filipinas for Rights and Empowerment (FiRE) who have been organizing several local and global campaigns. Learn more about our current programs, our allied organizations, and how Pinays are building a community, here, in the New York City area. See past event flyer here.

Pinay HERstories is also a nationwide arts project endeavor between the GABRIELA-USA organizations.

Monthly Public Educational Discussion (and workshop) Series
FiRE seeks nurture its members and sharpen their skills in critical analysis, especially applied to history, current issues, and the relationships between larger society and their personal lives. With this in mind, FiRE has developed a curriculum of educational discussions that revolve around personal migration stories, Philippine women situationers, Philippine women’s history of oppression and resistance, solid mass organizing, and know your rights training. Every member of the General Assembly is expected to facilitate or co-facilitate one educational discussion. This is in preparation for facilitation of external educational discussions, conducted by FiRE members at conferences and forums of other organizations, commonly student organizations in colleges and universities, such as the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND).

Pinay Brunch

A monthly space for FIlipina women to gather and share food and story. FiRE also hosts a special Mother’s Day Brunch to celebrate the women figures in our lives. This space is reserved for Pinays only; anyone who identifies as a Filipina woman is welcome! Email us (using fire.nyc@gmail.com) to be added to the brunch mailing list!

Summer Screenings

Whether it is art holding up a mirror to life, or the other way around, there is no doubt that both are intimately connected. Songs, books, movies, television – in other words, the media as a whole – permeates every aspect of modern life and may reflect the values of a society, or sometimes shape those values. In a summer film series, Filipinas for Rights and Empowerment (FiRE) – in collaboration with Young Educators for the Health and Empowerment of the Youth (YEHEY) of Philippine Forum – specifically explores how Filipinas are portrayed in popular media. FiRE explores how these depictions are created, how positive images can be perpetuated, and how negative stereotypes can be defeated. Now, more than ever, in a fast-paced, technologically advanced world, we need to examine all that we see and hear with critical consciousness.
