Gabriela demands Palace immediate intervention, not just probe

The brutal demolition of houses and violent dispersal against the residents of Barangay Corazon de Jesus in San Juan is another horrific act of state forces against the poor. Aside from the presence of snipers, reports also show that the police used teargas that affected children and elderly residents, including those that were inside their houses.

“Today’s violent demolition in Barangay Corazon de Jesus that hurt a number of women and children is yet another attack against the urban poor—attacks of state forces under this present administration has been carrying out with such fervor,” said Lana Linaban, GABRIELA secretary general.

“Photos and videos of the demolition clearly showed the violence was instigated by SWAT and San Juan local government. The least that Aquino should do is to order a halt in the operation, ensure that the demolition team will not return some other day to tear down more houses in the community. The government should also compensate the victims and punish the people behind this violence,” said Linaban.

The group calls for the immediate release of all residents who were arrested during the operations.

Slamming San Juan local government’s pronouncement placing the blame on “activists” the violent result of the demolition operation, GABRIELA reiterates its support for the fight of the residents to defend their land and homes that were awarded by previous administration thru Executive Order 164 and 54. ###
